The key is to prepare by building up the south's infrastructure and factories in advance and unlocking the Free Corps decision. I recently won the civil war, even losing most of my divisions to the Constitutionalist rebels. I'm almost certain the Civil War isn't working as intended, and I'd love to see a Dev, or at least a Moderator, make an official statement about this. Honestly, the US civil war is broke af at the moment, to the point where it's not even worth playing. Winning the war is counter-productive though, because even if you win, you get stuck as unaligned unless you drag out the war long enough to get Honor the Confederacy.

The rebels will have swarms of citizen militia divisions and their own newly-built army divisions, but it shouldn't be hard to deal with if you cheese the Boston area so you can focus on the West Coast. Park the Free Corps divisions in the Rockies, cap open territory in the Mid-West, and rush deploy new army divisions as soon as they hit 20% Green. Build a whole bunch of Cav or Inf or Armored or Airborn, if you have the tech, and the Free Corps should fire around the time Commifornia rebels. When the war starts, the rebels don't get any regular army divisions (because you don't have any), so that one division in NYC can rush and cap the VPs around Boston very easily.

Ignore the focus that keeps states in the Union, instead, beeline for Free Corps. Disband all but one division, park that division in NYC.
